Blossoming Almond Tree

After Vincent van Gogh learned that his brother Theo and Theo's wife Jo gave birth to a son he was most delighted; 'Today I heard the good news that you have become a father, that the most critical point for Jo is finished and that now finally the little one is doing well. It makes me so happy that I can't express it in words.'

As van Gogh did not need words as the joyous news that his psychological problems where supressed temporarily and thus also inspired him to paint the Blossoming Almond Tree. While painting the piece Van Gogh was inspired by the Japanese printing style.

As this particular piece is a cut out it is difficult to determine whether the blossoming branches are part of the tree or are standing in a vase. The winding branches seem as if they are floating in a summery blue sky. This makes the Blossoming Almond Tree a unique piece within the works of Van Gogh and furthermore symbolises the beginning of new life and the unforgetable gift of life.
